尾形月耕 Ogata Gekko (1859-1920)
Ukiyo-e artist and Japanese-style painter of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Kyobashi, Edo. Admired Tani Buncho, Kikuchi Yosai, Kawanabe Kyosai, and others, and studied painting by himself. In the early years of the Meiji era (1868-1912), he painted maki-e for ebira (picture leaflets) and rickshaws, and preliminary sketches for pottery for export.
Around 1887, he and 水野年方 Mizuno Toshikata became extremely popular as two of the best illustrators for newspapers.
His works include "Gekko Manga" and "Gekko Essay". He also actively participated in overseas world expositions, exhibiting at the Chicago Columbus Exposition in 1893, Paris in 1900, the 5th National Industrial Exhibition in 1903, and the Japan-Britain Exposition in 1910

尾形月耕 Ogata Gekko (1859-1920)
