土佐光起 Tosa Mitsuoki (1617-1691)
Born in Sakai, Izumi Province. Father was Tosa Mitsunori. Leading painter of the Tosa school of the Edo period, known as the 'founder of the Tosa family'. He established the Tosa school of painting in the Edo period by introducing the traditional elegant Yamato-e style into the clear-cut sketch style. He participated with Jyokei in the construction of the Kyoto Imperial Palace in the Jouo era, and produced fusuma-e (sliding door paintings) and sugido-e (cedar door paintings).
