This is a facsimile of a hanging scroll portrait that was handed down to the Terao family of the Kumamoto clan, who inherited the military art of Niten Ichiryu from Musashi. It was painted shortly after Miyamoto Musashi's death in 1645 and is said to have been done by a painter of the Kano school. It is said to be the most accurate depiction of him in life among his many portraits.
