Gold Wave pattern Lacquered Five-Tiered Box Jubako Makie Gold lacquered 'Animal, Flowers and Bird' with Box VA247

This Jubako is framed entirely by gold maki-e wave patterns. Animals, flowers, and birds are beautifully and finely depicted. The front of the lid depicts a Shishi (Lion), a legendary animal and the bottom part depicts four legendary spirit beasts - a Blue dragon, a Qilin, a Genbu, and a Phoenix. The color, massiveness, and gold wavy pattern create a contrast and give a sense of solemnity. The inside of the box is lacquered in red lacquer. The period is estimated to be from the late Edo period to the Meiji period.
